Robert J. Koester joined the Appalachian Search and Rescue Conference in 1981 and since then has participated in hundreds of searches. His contributions to SAR include seminal research on lost person behavior, probability of detection, and missing aircraft. He is a Search Mission Coordinator and instructor for the Virginia Department of Emergency Management where he developed training for Incident Commanders. Robert has worked for the US Coast Guard, NASA, National Park Service, and FEMA. He is author of numerous books and articles on search and rescue, including the first edition of the Field Operations Guide for Search and Rescue published in 1996. Robert has presented on the Incident Command System and other search and rescue topics around the world.
