About the Author

Christopher S. Young has been active in Search and Rescue since 1981. He has managed searches since 1986 and is a Reserve Captain for the Contra Costa County (California) Sheriff s Search and Rescue Team. He also serves as Chairman of the San Francisco Bay Area Search and Rescue Council (BASARC). Chris is a member of the American Society of Law Enforcement Trainers (ASLET) and has been an Instructor for the California Governor s Office of Emergency Services since 1989. Chris has written and published search management papers and presents nationally on Search Management in the Urban Environment Chris is a Level 1 law enforcement reserve with the Contra Costa County Sheriff s Department and the Town of Danville, California. John Wehbring helped organize the San Diego Mountain Rescue Team (SDMRT) in 1967 and has served six terms as President of SDMRT as well as secretary of the Mountain Rescue Association, which awarded him the Distinguished Lifetime Service Award. He was chief writer and editor of SDMRT s Operations Manual and has written numerous journal articles on SAR. As well, he developed guidelines for adapting wilderness search techniques to urban searching. John has participated in over 1,000 SAR missions in the past 40 years. Since 2002, SDMRT has been involved in 91 urban searches working with the SAR Bureau of San Diego Sheriff s Department. Contributors Kimberly R. Kelly is the founder and executive director of Project Far From Home, a national training program designed to educate law enforcement, search and rescue, fire, EMS, and others who may search for missing at-risk elders. She serves as a Reserve Lieutenant with the San Diego County Sheriff s Department in charge of SAR Training and the annual SAR Academy. Robert J. Koester is author of numerous books and articles on search and rescue and is an international presenter/trainer. He has contributed seminal research on lost person behavior and created the International Search and Rescue Incident Database (ISRID). Michael St. John is Operations Coordinator for the Marin County Sheriff SAR Unit. He teaches courses in search management for the California Governor s Office of Emergency Services Law Enforcement Division and has played an integral role in developing the curriculum for abduction search strategies.
