Book by Anthony, Susan C

This is a staggering array of facts compiled by the author in six years of teaching and designed to goad information literacy. Not content with her students' results using standard almanacs, Anthony did her own thing, and produced an extremely useful resource room and library text that furnishes hundreds of unrelated facts in tidy readable sections. Countless charts and illustrations fill these pagies. We also have a partial bibliography of primary sources, a complete index, and generous notes to amplify some issues. The problem inherent in making facts manageable is that we may become engrossed in the value of the material's organization and lose sight of errors, questionable references and simple mistakes. The section on library fails to mention computer applications. The punctuation section shows us a picture of the semicolon but never explains its uses. In the "Major World Religion" portion, I found statements that might be considered misleading. (Is it justified to burden the author with the responsibility for all this, sans experts?) And why must we end with the grubby, "Take care of yourself' or the disinterested, "Well, have a nice day." My preference is Anthony's optional, "Smile, say goodbye, and leave." -- From Independent Publisher
