Robert Evangelista currently serves as production launch manager for General Motor’s Premium V Future Engine Programs in Michigan. In his 16 years with GM, he has managed operations with $45 million annual operating budgets and staffs of 400 people.
Using the team-building process described in The Business of Winning, Robert successfully reduced operating costs by 25%, increased production by 50%, and improved quality by 40%, all within one year.
The tactics Evangelista used to coach an inner-city hockey team also helped him achieve success in building teams as a manufacturing manager at GM. But the most obvious techniques, he says, are often the least likely to work. For example, a coach must motivate in a calm and rational way, rather than voicing opinions on the team's performance. Borrowing techniques from well-known coaches, including Lou Holtz, Vince Lombardi and Pat Riley, Evangelista offers up solid, if familiar, advice.
