NATURAL WONDERS EXPLORED AND EXPLAINED . . . an authoritative, user-friendly guide to awe-inspiring landscapes of the Greater Southwest (desert and canyon country of southern California, Arizona, New Mexico, northern Mexico, western Texas, Nevada, Utah, and western Colorado). Lavishly illustrated with 315 color photographs, 33 illustrations, and 7 maps, including a customized 15"x 20" tear-out road map. The text blends travel tips, Native American legends, prehistoric and historic vignettes, and non-technical explanations of earthly processes and events that have shaped the land, people, and wildlife. Included are attractions as familiar as the Grand Canyon and those as unfamiliar as musical dunes and dinosaur tracks.

The writing is informative without being academic, suitable for all adults and students in junior high and up. And the back-matter is packed with resources to help outdoor adventure-seekers plan their trips: 136 helpful websites, annotated listings for 63 books and 109 scenic attractions (including notable sites outside the parks), and a comprehensive index.

About the Author:
Photographer-ecologist Thomas Wiewandt is a long-time resident of Arizona and New Mexico; and this book grew from more than a decade of leading photographic workshops and natural history tours in the American Southwest. His films for the National Geographic Society and the BBC have earned him an Emmy Nomination in cinematography, a Gold Apple Award, and four Cine Golden Eagles. Smithsonian, National Wildlife, Geo, Audubon, and Arizona Highways are among the many magazines to feature his work; and his children's book Hidden Life of the Desert (Crown/Random House) made the John Burroughs List of Outstanding Nature Books for Young Readers. Tom holds degrees in zoology and ecology (M.S., University of Arizona; Ph.D., Cornell), and serves on the IUCN Species Survival Commission for endangered iguanas. Geologist Maureen Wilks directs the Geological Information Center at the New Mexico Bureau of Mines and Mineral Resources in Socorro, a specialized library and archive focused on the state's mineral and water resources and its mining and petroleum industries. She also is responsible for New Mexico's geochronological database. Her degrees are in geology and geochemistry (B.A., Oxford, Great Britain; M.S., University of Saskatchewan, Canada; Ph.D., New Mexico Tech). Maureen has been awarded eleven research grants and scholarships since 1988. Raised in Great Britain, she was lured to the Southwest by images of red rock country, cacti, wildflowers, and sunny skies.
