AnnMae Johnson has taught in California, Illinois, and Wisconsin. She presently teaches at an alternative public school in Minnesota. She has visited schools in other countries including China and Japan. A fellowship at Cambridge University made it possible for her to study the English educational system. While there, she was a volunteer teacher for several months. AnnMae grew up on a farm in southwestern Minnesota. She received a B.A. degree from Wheaton College, Illinois, and an M.A. degree from Northern Illinois University.
