From the Inside Flap

From cradle to gate, the environmental effects of products used in building and construction (B/C) prompt researchers to explore and apply life-cycle assessment (LCA) techniques. In this report on the state of the art, nearly 50 international experts share their thinking on · Focus for LCA studies: in both B/C and building material and component combinations (BMCCs) · Guidelines for differing goals: cradle-to-gate and gate-to-grave · Service life scenarios: actual and dynamically modeled · End-of-life scenarios: formulated according to current waste management, developing recycling technologies, and country or site dependence · Indoor air quality (IAQ): its link to design and BMCCs · Labelling and declaration systems: the difficulty of exchanging labels and the need for harmonization Stressing knowledge transfer and communication, the authors of Life-Cycle Assessment in Building and Construction contribute significantly to our ability to make environmentally sound, meaningful choices in design and materials, from goal and scope definition to inventory analysis, impact assessment, interpretation and communication of results, and relation to other assessment instruments. Not only LCA practitioners but also manufacturers and designers will reap rewards from the well-considered contents of this book.
