The QuitSmart Stop-Smoking Kit was developed by the director of the prestigious Duke University Medical Center Stop Smoking Program. It is based on many scientific studies, and on experience with thousands of smokers. The QuitSmart Kit includes an original paperback guidebook, hypnosis audiotape, and patented cigarette substitute. QuitSmart Guidebook. The guidebook, QuitSmart Stop With the QuitSmart System it's easier than you think!, is written in an easy-to-read, non-technical style. Dr. Mark Tager wrote, in a review published in the American Journal of Health Promotion, "The appealing prose, cartoons and charts make for engaging reading." The guidebook teaches that successful quitting is not so much a matter of willpower as it is of skill-doing the right things and thinking the right thoughts to make sure you succeed, and succeed without suffering. There is no attempt to scare you into quitting. In fact, the dangers of smoking are not listed until the end of the book, and then only to reinforce the new ex-smoker's abstinence. The smoker who is physically addicted -- identified by a brief questionnaire -- is given two options for gradually weaning off nicotine. Prior to quitting, the smoker can switch to brands of cigarettes that contain progressively less nicotine -- the book provides the nicotine content of all U.S. cigarette brands. Over a couple of weeks of brand switching, much of the nicotine is eliminated from the smoker's system, and the person can then quit with few physical withdrawal symptoms. This method is sometimes called "Warm Chicken Quitting." The second option for weaning off nicotine is use of medication. Information is included on nicotine-replacement products (including a chapter by Dr. Jed Rose, inventor of the nicotine skin patch) and on Zyban, the non-nicotine pill. The QuitSmart Guidebook also presents up-to-date information on many other issues facing the person trying to break free from cigarettes. In a chapter titled "Thinking Makes it So," the reader is taught to foster the self image of a calm and happy "You are what you believe. Believing you are a permanent non-smoker who is calm and happy will naturally lead to that outcome." The reader also learns six habit busters and eleven coping methods, and seven ways to control weight. Better Quit(r) Cigarette Substitute. The most unique ingredient in the kit is the cigarette substitute. The patented device looks and feels like a real cigarette. Users can adjust the air flow to match the draw of their favorite cigarette. A carrying tube with a pocket clip helps to keep the cigarette substitute clean and handy. As stated in the QuitSmart book, "New exsmokers are like newcomers to a nudist colony-they don't know what to do with their hands. The Better Quit Cigarette Substitute gives you something to do with your hands and mouth. It looks and feels like a real cigarette. The Better Quit Substitute also reminds you to take deep, relaxing breaths-just like you did when you smoked cigarettes." Use of the Better Quit substitute gradually weakens the habit of handling and puffing on a cigarette. "Rewarding jolts of nicotine to the brain have been paired with handling and inhaling from cigarettes," says Dr. Shipley. "With use of the Better Quit substitute, the pairing no longer occurs and the pleasure that the ex- smoker finds in handling a cigarette diminishes." QuitSmart Hypnosis Audiocassette. Following relaxation instructions, delivered by Robert Conroy's smooth relaxing voice, side one of the tape offers suggestions for quitting, and side two gives suggestions for remaining a nonsmoker. Like the guidebook, the tape avoids scare tactics in favor of positive suggestions such as, "Always give your body clean, fresh, healthy air." The tape reduces the anxiety commonly experienced by new ex-smokers and helps the listener develop the care and respect for their body that naturally leads to permanent freedom from smoking. The QuitSmart Stop Smoking Kit has been used by over 100,000 people. It has been selected for use by hundreds of hospitals, universities, military bases, and well-known companies. The QuitSmart Stop Smoking System has proven highly effective in several published scientific studies.

I've worked my entire professional life to develop effective methods to help smokers break free from their deadly addiction. A clinical psychologist and tobacco researcher, I'm an ex-smoker myself. My father smoked and died of a heart attack. I want you to succeed in quitting while you remain calm and comfortable. I sincerely believe that the QuitSmart Kit is the best self-help stop-smoking resource available.
Stop the Debate
George quit smoking but suffered much longer than most people. Several weeks after quitting, he was still irritable and anxious, and had lots of urges for a cigarette. With each urge, he debated: "Should I smoke or not? Maybe I could have just one."
Then something happened. His best buddy, a smoker, was diagnosed as having lung cancer. This hit George very hard. Cigarettes were killing his best friend. George decided-really decided-that he would never smoke again, that he was a nonsmoker no matter what! Most of the withdrawal symptoms disappeared. He suffered no more "nerves," and he had few urges to smoke. Why?
Once George really decided that, no matter what, he would never smoke again, the internal debate ended. It was this constant debate, the back and froth thoughts about whether or not to have a cigarette, that caused his long suffering.
Once you really decide you are a nonsmoker, urges are not relevant. You no longer have to think about cigarettes all the time, and your mind can move on to more pleasant things.
If you have not yet made a firm decision to quit for good, think it through one last time. It may not be an easy decision. If despite mixed feeling, you decide that you want most to quit, make your decision and do not debate it further. When you make a firm decision to quit, you will be surprised at how easy quitting can be.
