From School Library Journal

Gr 2-3-A story about two best friends living in pre-World War II California. Jeannie loves to visit Amy, who is a Japanese-American, especially because she lives with her seamstress mother in a movie star's servants' quarters. The girls spend their free time discussing and attending all of the latest films. But the attack on Pearl Harbor changes Amy's life drastically, as she and her family are forced to relocate to a government internment camp. Both children discover the unpleasant realities of bigotry and the irrationality that war creates. Second and third graders may not relate to all the references made to stars like Clark Gable and Lana Turner. However, this is well-executed, easy-to-read historical fiction that has enough character and plot development to give readers a glimpse of how America violated the civil rights of Japanese-Americans. A postscript explains the reasons for and results of the war with Japan, America's domestic policy, and the 1988 Redress Bill that was designed to compensate survivors of internment.- Rita Soltan, Baldwin Public Library, Birmingham, MI
