Dorcas Buchanan is nearing her fifty-fifth birthday when she learns that her eighty-year-old mother, Lavinia, a popular landscape artist, has begun painting and exhibiting erotic nudes in her small Pennsylvania hometown of Juniata. Fearing that her mother may be suffering from dementia, Dorcas goes home for a visit. Lavinia seems to be in fine fettle, acid-tongued and feisty and about to begin writing her memoirs.

Dorcas herself is off balance, however. She has recently broken up with a man she planned to marry, she is disenchanted with teaching, and she is ripe for change. She moves back to Juniata to renovate a run-down house, open a bed-and-breakfast there, and try to build a new life. Soon Dorcas's life is further complicated by the arrival of her daughter, Sasha, from California, with some surprising revelations of her own.

Alternating between Dorcas's and Lavinia's points of view, the reader learns the long-buried story behind Lavinia's nude paintings, Dorcas's own secret of Sasha's origins, and the chances that Dorcas will make a go of her new life.

About the Author

Carolyn Meyer is the author of forty-nine young adult and children's books, twenty-five of them fiction. Her historical novel "Anastasia" was a New York Times best-seller. Others were named to "best books" lists by the American Library Association and won numerous other awards. "Brown Eyes Blue" is her fiftieth book and her first for adult readers. Meyer was born and raised in Lewistown, Pennsylvania. She now lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
