This yearbook consists of papers presented at the 1997-98 round-table sessions in Ascona, Switzerland, known as the "Eranos Tagungen." The Eranos Foundation has the purpose of preserving and increasing the value of rich cultural, psychological, spiritual, ancestral and archetypal tradition, in particular by continuing the series of academic seminars and meetings. The yearly, eight-day conference brings people from fields ranging from depth psychology and comparative religion to history, literary criticism and folklore.

This is the sixty-seventh volume in the Eranos Yearbook series begun in 1931 by the Eranos Foundation located in Ascona, Swtizerland. This volume contains not only seminal articles on the lastest ideas dealing with the now catch-all term shamanism (which was just a specific word used to refer to a healer/priest found among certain Siberian tribes), but also expands the understanding and importance of the figures around shamans who record their acts and sayings. This is done in wide rage of articles written by some of the most interesting up and coming scholars from around the world.

For examples there is Pio Filippani Ronconi on the fundamental psychology of shamanism, and American Robert Bosnak on the use of dreams for healing diseases and traumas. There is also the Japancese scholar Massayuki Sato on the difference between Eastern and Western approaches to time and the German scholar Lorencz Bichler on the almost divinatory role of modern historians/chroniclers in communist China. There is also: Mokusen Miuyuki from Japan and California; Nathan Schwartz-Salant, the co-founder of Chiron and the editor Jungs's alchemical texts for Princeton University Press; Renos Papadopoulos, the editor of the London Jungian journal, Harvest; Norboru Maruyama of the Uehiro Foundation; and the Berlin German scholar of Judiasm, Joachim Schlor.
