Synopsis

The House that Giacomo Build is the engaging story of the struggle, perseverance, and success of an Italian working-class family to achieve its goal of stability and family unity. It begins in southern Italy at the turn of the centruy with the unremittingly impoverished lives of Rosa and Francesco Patella. Moving north with them in 1933, as the couple search for a better life, we follow the fortunes of Maria, their daughter, and her husband, Giacomo Savo, and their four children. The story of the Savo family speaks to people everywhere who are seeking for social arrangements that will give added meaning to their lives.

I was unprepared for what I saw when I drove into Giacomo's yard on Sunday, January 23, 1977. I had been out of touch with the Savo family for some time. I had sent a telegram from Rome saying that I would be down for the day, but it had not arrived. Maria was hanging out the wash. She was surprised to see me but not unduly so; life is full of the unpredictable.
