Word Building Book B, Second Edition, is a Response to Intervention program designed for students experiencing difficulty learning basic decoding skills. Book A presents long-vowel patterns and consonant clusters (blends). Word Building presents a carefully sequenced series of word patterns in a functional fashion. After being introduced to the patterns, students immediately use them in their reading and writing. Activities in the worktext include building words, reading high-interest fictional and informational selections that incorporate the patterns introduced, completing fill-in-the-blank comprehension exercises, completing word puzzles, reassembling scrambled sentences, solving riddles, sorting, deciphering secret messages, and composing brief written pieces. A research-based program, Word Building grew out of the author's extensive experience with struggling readers in a university clinic and public school classrooms.
