Recipes with a Southwestern flavor are accompanied by several stories featuring the traditional trickster Coyote and several simple craft projects

Grade 3-5?This cookbook attempts to explain the cuisine, cultures, and traditions of the Southwest; it succeeds more in some aspects than in others. The three sections cover Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. Within each is a retelling of a coyote story, 13-18 recipes, and one or two craft projects. The recipes are simple but good. They are clearly explained for beginning cooks and, while they call for some prepared foods, do introduce children and their adult helpers to some of the special dishes of the region. In addition to tortillas, burritos, and guacamole, the authors include some less familiar foods, such as jicama, pine nuts, and hominy. The crafts include cornhusk dolls, gourd rattles, and "clay" flour mixture pottery; directions are clear, simple, and attentive to safety concerns. The three coyote stories, however, are disappointing. The many-faceted trickster is given short shrift in the slangy style that portrays him as a cartoon character. For coyote tales, turn to John Bierhorst's Doctor Coyote (Macmillan, 1987).?Carolyn Jenks, First Parish Unitarian Church, Portland, ME

Gr. 4^-6. Beginning with an introduction to the trickster character Coyote, this book uses stories "based loosely on Native American legends" to add a narrative element to a collection of many recipes and a few craft activities from Texas (called "Cowboy Recipes" ), Arizona ("Native American Recipes" ), and New Mexico (though many of the New Mexican selections seem to be Mexican). Fast facts about the three states appear beside most of the recipes. Children will need help preparing most of the food, but the supplies, ingredients, and instructions are well explained. The small-scale pictures, particularly those illustrating craft and cooking activities, are more successful than the larger drawings illustrating the coyote stories. Although this has special regional interest, librarians seeking Native American recipes for children will find it a useful resource. Carolyn Phelan
