Reviews

Grade 9 Up-Lukes tells Crane's story with energy and an obvious love of her subject, introducing readers along the way to many of the literary and personal forces at work during the writer's brief life. She not only relates her subject's meteoric rise to fame but also brings to dramatic life his work as a war correspondent in the Spanish-American War, witnessing Teddy Roosevelt's charge up San Juan Hill; his nightmarish adventure aboard the ill-fated Commodore; and his death at age 28. The black-and-white photos offer glimpses of the people he met and places he roamed. Copious endnotes document the text. Lukes's gift for storytelling and her stirring prose result in a thoroughly readable and informative volume.
