In the early days, the railroads brought a commercial and industrial diversity that put the city on the map. That same diversity is evident today in the strong economy and the enviable quality of life that residents enjoy. What the railroads did for the economy, Route 66 did for vacationers. Many folks traveling the Mother Road made it as far as Springfield and saw no reason to go any further. And why should they? Springfield still has affordable housing, great schools, world-class health care, a vibrant arts community, exciting sports, numerous parks and recreational opportunities-everything to make it a top-ranked city. Whether you are a visitor, a newcomer, or a longtime resident, we hope you'll learn some things about your city that you didn't know before. We've done our best to include a secret or two for everyone. Finally, at the heart of Springfield is the spirit of its people. They are known for their work ethic, midwestern sensibility, and fortitude. But they also know how to relax and have fun. Whether sitting on the front porch talking with friends, cheering the hometown baseball team, enjoying dinner and the theatre or the symphony, or shopping nonstop, Springfield has something for everyone.
