Kevin Edwards, schooled in the Catholic Christian Tradition, holds an STB and an STM from the Angelicum in Rome in Sacred Theology. He is writer, poet and story-teller, and leads seminars and retreats around the world. He lives in Chicago.

1. The Bell Tower * The Master decided to climb the bell tower and invited a disciple to join him. ‘No thank you,’ replied the disciple, ‘I’ve already seen the view from the top of the tower.’ ‘Indeed, you’ve seen the view from the top of the tower,’ said the Master, ‘but you’ve not seen the view from the top of the tower this day.’ ‘True,’ said the disciple, ‘but I have seen it on similar days.’ At that the Master grew angry and struck the disciple freely. ‘You’ve not learned one thing since you came here,’ said the Master. ‘Life is now, stop living on memories!’ Shortly after, the Master died, and his disciples had his final words inscribed on his headstone. In bold letters they wrote the following: ‘I’ve seen that before, I’ve tasted that before, I’ve heard that before, I’ve felt that before, We’ve met before. These are the words of one who will never re-enter childhood.’ _________ Familiarity is a barrier to experiencing each moment with freshness. 2. The Master often said that time could be better spent looking inward than outward. When asked what he meant, he told this story. ‘A glass cleaner erected scaffolding, and proceeded to climb toward the few windows that were out of reach. When he arrived, he took his sponge, soaked the glass and ran his squeegee. But the glass didn’t wash clean. After just a few attempts he realized that the dirt was on the inside.’ ‘So it is with each of us,’ the Master added. ‘Which is why we must turn our attention inward.’ _________ Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye’ Matthew 7:3 3. An eager young missionary was sent overseas to preach the good news. But wherever he went he met with resistance. ‘You will be hated by all because of my name,’ he thought to himself, and so he made little of it. But as time passed the villagers grew to vehemently despise the young missionary, which only strengthened his resolve. Eventually, the missionary died and was brought to judgment, where there appeared before him a large scroll. Upon it was written, ‘You will be hated by all because of me.’ Believing this to be his rite of passage, at once he sought to enter paradise. When suddenly there came a voice. ‘Not you. You were hated for other reasons.’ When the crusaders came they brought bloodshed. When the angels came they brought tidings of great joy. How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news! Romans 10:15
