I have always felt that protest letters from publishers or authors over bad reviews are ineffective. But with Rosalyn Pierrini's review of RiverWood's first children's book, MY SECRET BULLY, I feel compelled to respond to her negative comments that are unfair and purely subjective in part and ridiculous in fact. Ms. Pierrini states: "A muddy palette, uninspired renderings of the characters, and a small typeface detract substantially from the appeal of this picture book." Ms. Marble's illustrations are in a style that may not be to Ms. Pierrni's taste, but that is a rather subjective comment. Marble's watercolor paintings are highly emotional and draw the reader's attention to the inner turmoil, confusion, resolve, and compassion reflected in the faces of the characters who are confronted with the relational aggression taking place in Ms. Ludwig's engaging story. There is nothing "muddy" at all about the illustrations, which many educators and librarians have highly praised. As for the "small typeface," this is just an absurd comment. The font used is Berkeley at 14.5 point size. To give readers points of comparison, the typeface is larger than the type used in Chris Van Allsburg's THE POLAR EXPRESS and appears to my eye to be the same size typeface as used in Robert McClosky's MAKE WAY FOR DUCKLINGS.

MY SECRET BULLY is an important book that is being widely praised as a "must read" by school librarians and counselors and has just been featured on ABC Television's Good Morning America. I encourage any child or family dealing with emotional bullying to make use of this book.

About the Author: Trudy Ludwig’s new book, My Secret Bully, was written to raise awareness of the growing problem of emotional bullies in the schoolyard. An award-winning writer, Trudy first became aware of relational aggression when her own daughter became a target. Trudy lives in Portland, Oregon, with her husband, Brad, and children, Allison and Bennett.

About the Illustrator:
Abigail Marble illustrated her first children's story in second grade, and has been studying and working the fields of art and design ever since. Abigail lives in Portland, Oregon where she works as a graphic designer and illustrator. My Secret Bully is her first published book.
