Synopsis
This is a major new collection of original poems from the premiere translator of Rumi (his latest book, The Soul of Rumi, was published September 2001 by HarperSanFrancisco). Along with translating Rumi for the last 25 years, Coleman has been writing his own poetry. His last volume, Gourd Seed, came out in 1993. This is a collection from work done over the last eight years.

About the Author
Coleman Barks was born and raised in Chattanooga, TN. He went to school at the University of North Carolina and at the University of California, Berkeley. He taught poetry and creative writing at the University of Georgia for 30 years. In 1976 he met Robert Bly and began translating the 13th-century mystic, Rumi. In 1977 he met the Sufi master Bawa Muhaiyaddeen, and until that teacher's death in 1986, he visited several times a year at the fellowship in Philadelphia.In 1984, he began publishing the Rumi work with Open Secret (Threshold). Poet Bill Stafford gave that book the Pushcart Writer's Choice Award. In 1995 the Rumi translations were collected in a definitive bestselling anthology, The Essential Rumi (HarperCollins). His work with Rumi was the subject of a hour-long segment in Bill Moyers' Language of Life series on PBS. Another Moyers interview, a PBS special featuring Coleman (Fooling with Words), aired in 1999. A selection of the Rumi translations apears in the prestigious 7th edition of the Norton Anthology of World Masterpieces. Coleman Barks has frequently appeared at colleges and poetry events and on many radio and TV programs reading Rumi's poetry with musicians and dancers. His translations of Rumi have now sold a half a million copies. The father of two grown children and grandfather of three, he has retired now and lives in Athens, Georgia.
