"I consider your book to be one of the best I have read in many years." -- Ret. Brigadier General Robert James
"Most impressive." -- Charles Hay III, Archivist, Special Collections and Archives, Eastern Kentucky University
"The military history of Kentucky spans centuries and blends the lives of social, political, and economic institutions with a dazzling array of personalities and events. Call To Arms outlines the vast subject in a concise, chronological series of anecodotes, biographical sketches, and statistical summaries. Early vignettes range from George Rogers Clark's eighteenth-centuryexploits tolesser-known Kentucky connections, such as that of Henry Wirtz, commandant of the infamous Civil War prison at Andersonville, Georgia. (He lived in Cadiz, Kentucky for a period befor the war.)
Yet the work's best aspect is its attention to developments in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, eras sometimes slighted by Kentucky historians. Pen portraits here also reflect a broad spectrum: institutional evolution (linage of Kentucky National Guard units); individual achievements (Mason County's Col. Charles Young, highest ranking black officer in World War I); and recent national events (Kentuckians' participation in the Korean, Vietnam, and Persian Gulf Wars).
Documentation would have proved helpful to readers seeking more information. Nevertheless, Call To Arms is an engaging introduction to a profound field of inquiry. -- Register Of The Kentucky Historical Society
