The Second Grave traces the history of violence in Kentucky from 1742 to the present. The author finds in this history an evolution away from the violence of the past, which he believes will lead to Kentucky abolishing the death penalty. The major arguments about capital punishment, pro and con, are set forth, and Kentucky's own history and experience are used to demonstrate the failure of the death penalty in the reduction of violence.

Review:
I believe The Second Grave will have a major impact in causing people to reconsider their support for the death penalty. Wedekind describes in true detail the relationship between a history of violence, racial discrimination and povert, and the imposition of the death penalty today. An understanding of this history is essential in the struggle to abolish the death penalty. -- Stephen B. Bright Director, Southern Center for Human Rights in Atlanta, Ga.
