In 1938, Helen, the daughter of a naturalized American mother of German birth and a German father, who as a merchant seaman, had "jumped ship" to stay in this country, was torn from her idyllic life in New York when immigration authorities discovered her father's illegal status. Forced to return to Germany, with the hope of gaining legal re-entry to the U.S., her father decided to include his family in the sojourn, rather than risk what might entail a lengthy separation.
Thus began a saga with which the author provides a compelling account of daily life in Germany during the years just prior to the beginning of World War II, and sweeps the reader along through the horrors of the total destruction of the city of Hamburg by Allied bombers in July of 1943.
It is a story told from the unusual perspective of a family that could not enjoy total acceptance by either the culture of their choice or of their roots, and will permit insights into areas of German life rarely found in other wartime reminiscences.
