This is not a modern reprint, print-on-demand or facsimile copy. This is a soft cover book published by Tyron Publishing Company, Inc., Chapel Hill, NC. Cover design by Julia Calhoun Williams. There are numerous drawings, a Table of Contents, a list of Pen and Ink Drawings and Maps and a Bibliography. From the publisher: Tryon's history, culture and development have been shaped by diverse influences. Descendants of the original settlers still populate the area, and over the years, native families have produced some noted national figures, including "Old Bill Williams," the indomitable pioneer who scouted the Santa Fe Trail; songstress Nina Simone; and miler Tony Waldrop. The sketchbook explores the history of the town and the development of its cultural, academic and religious resources. The illustrations speak to both Tryon's past and present, with the railroad depot and the Fine Arts Center both represented. The illustrator, Mosseller studied at the Art Students' League in New York, and has, for a number of years, been the country's only formal tapestry and rug maker whose works are wrought entirely by hand. Mosseller's rugs, "fine paintings in wool," have been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and are in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian, the Virginia and North Carolina Governor's mansions and the Williamsburg Inn. Mosseller also works in watercolor, oils and the pen and ink sketches that are featured in the book. The author, Anna Pack Conner is a lifelong resident of the Polk County and Tryon area, where she taught school for almost 30 years. She has served as vice-president of the Polk County Historical Association.
