About the Author:

MARY ADAMEK is Clinical Professor of Music Therapy at The University of Iowa. She specializes in music therapy and music education with students with disabilities, from young children through transition and college-aged youth. She has published several articles and book chapters on these topics and has offered lectures and workshops throughout the U.S. and internationally. She is a former president of the American Music Therapy Association, and she is a recipient of the AMTA Service Award, the AMTA Award of Merit, and the AMTA Lifetime Achievement Award. ALICE-ANN DARROW is Irvin Cooper Professor of Music at Florida State University. Her teaching and research interests are teaching music to special populations, inclusive practices for students with disabilities particularly those with behavior disorders and deaf/hard-of-hearing and the role of nonverbal communication in the music classroom. Related to these topics, she has published numerous monographs, research articles, and book chapters. Darrow is editor of the text Introduction to Approaches in Music Therapy, and co-author of Music Therapy with Geriatric Populations: A Handbook for Practicing Music Therapists and Healthcare Professionals. She presently serves on the NAfME task force for the inclusion of students with disabilities, and as Florida Music Education Association chair for diverse learners.
