"The border means many different things to a wide variety of people. There is the actual political and social zone, 'the border' or 'la frontera,' as Spanish speakers often refer to it. There is also that unique psychological area, the border as a field of psychic energy, of angst, or of hope for persons who live in or near it to carry it within themselves wherever they actually live. Far more real is the culture, that complex evolving multicultural, multilingual society that rises, dances, dialogues with, and flows all round the old certainties, those political rigidities of the nineteenth century that are still with us.
