Dr. Lareau Lindquist, founder of Barnabas, International based in Rockford, Illinois, has followed up his first book Too Soon To Quit with this inspirational collection of essays on encouragement. Each chapter is just two or three pages and focuses on an anecdote from his personal experience, but they also touch on universal themes--such as loneliness, fear, hurt, hopelessness and grief. Not just glib platitudes, Why, Lord...Why? answers questions on the minds of every reader.

Dr. Lareau Lindquist founded his organization Barnabas International with his wife Evie 20 years ago. Barnabas has a staff of more than 50 that serve Christian ministers and missionaries in more than 115 countries worldwide. Before starting Barnabas International Dr. Lindquist was Executive Director for the Institute for Holy Land Studies, and a former senior pastor of First Evangelical Free Church in Rockford, Illinois. Before that he pastored several churches in California and Nebraska. He is a graduate of Trinity Evangelical College and Seminary.
I recently spent time with some old friends. During the course of conversation, they told me that they had begun reading Lareau Lindquist's Encouragement Letter. They then told me how God had used these brief letters to minister to them during particularly difficult times that they d experienced. As I ve traveled and listened to peoples stories, I ve found this to be a common theme. Lareau has blessed many people around the world over the last twenty years. I was pleased to see the first collection of them in his first book, Too Soon to Quit. And now, I am also greatly pleased to see its anticipated sequel Why, Lord...Why? This book isn t theoretical, written from the comfort and safety of an ivory tower. From my years of knowing the Lindquists I know that they have faced their own share of circumstances prompting one to ask the why questions. Lareau and Evie have also spent the last two decades traveling the world, listening and ministering encouragement to those who serve on the front lines. They have heard the heart cries personally, Why, Lord...Why? Yet Lareau has written a cheerful, openhearted book in a positive style that makes one feel that the words are coming from a friend. His warmth disarms. His note of encouragement finds a way into the hearts of readers and is embedded there. It penetrates the gloom and lifts the spirit on dark days when a simple beam of light and hope is called for. And I have learned that we all need a daily dose of that kind of encouragement. Experiencing peace in the midst of the chaos and confusion of ministry is not always easy. Ministry can be messy. We need constant reminders of His promise of peace. Just as Jesus spoke peace into the lives of His disciples, He instructed them to speak peace to others: When you enter a house, first say, Peace to this house, (Luke 10:5). Likewise we have also been commissioned to speak peace and encouragement to others. In, Why, Lord...Why? just Lareau faithfully points the reader back to the truth found in God s Word and the one who is the source of all peace and comfort. God has blessed that faithfulness and I m sure you will find that same encouragement as you read. May you experience His peace and encouragement today. --Lee Hotchkiss
Here is one book that I recommend to everyone! Lareau Lindquist draws from his own dramatic life experiences and from heroes of faith. In a day when there is so much pessimism and misery to contend with, it is wonderful to read these great words of inspiration. --Debra Maffett, Miss America 1983
These words were written by a man who truly reflects the name of the mission he founded, helping so many others to gain greater confidence in the workings of God in our lives even when we cry out Why, Lord...Why? --Tom Clinton, Exec. Dir., First Love Intl. Ministries
