Synopsis

This is a fan's nostalgic reminder of the great (and not-so-great) moments in the living memory of Cleveland Indians baseball. From the 1948 World Championship through some laughably bad seasons in the 1970s and 1980s to the championship seasons of the mid-1990s, this roller-coaster collection celebrates the top 350 highlights. Just mention a couple of them to any Indians fan and you'll see the reaction: Rocky Colavito and The Trade; Ten-Cent Beer Night; Len Barker's perfect game; Albert Belle's corked bat; the Jacob's Field magic of 1995. The memories roll on . . . A companion volume to the #1 bestselling Browns Memories by Tim Long.

Larry Doby. The IndiansÕ great center fielder was the first African-American player to enter the American League when he signed a contract on July 3, 1947, to play for the Tribe. He played 10 of his 13 major league seasons with Cleveland, finishing his career with a lifetime .283 batting average, 253 home runs, and 969 RBIs. 65 Tribe Trivia: The baseball movie The Natural (1984), starring Robert Redford as Roy Hobbs, featured an appearance by what Indians outfielder? (Hint: For just one season, he, too, looked like a Ònatural.Ó) Answer: Joe Charboneau, who appeared as a member of the New York Knights baseball team. 94

Opening Day: In 1974, too help prop up sagging attendance, Indians management hired the ÒGreat Hugo ZucchiniÓ to blast out of a cannon and shoot across the outfield at Municipal Stadium. Hugo didnÕt help. The Tribe lost, 6Ð4 to the Milwaukee Brewers. 210 Bad Trade: In 1988, the Indians wanted shortstop Julio Franco to switch positions and play second base. Julio wouldnÕt play along and was traded to the Texas Rangers on December 6, 1988, for first baseman Pete OÕBrien, outfielder Odibe McDowell, and second baseman Jerry Browne. Julio had four great years with Texas and won the American League batting title in 1991 with a .341 average. OÕBrien left the Tribe after one season, McDowell was traded in 1989 to the Atlanta Braves, and Browne played well for two seasons but became a free agent after 1991.
