This new illustrated history of Dallas, written in a lively style, offers fresh insights into the city’s meteoric emergence as one of the nation’s most celebrated cities. Many of the accompanying illustrations have never before been published. The author, Darwin Payne, and the illustrations editor, Michael V. Hazel, are widely known for their studies of Dallas and its surrounding areas.

Incorporated or not, the streets of Dallas could be wild and woolly. ... In the 1850s cowboys driving cattle bound for markets in Missouri and other places north of Texas crossed the Trinity within sight of the courthouse. Naturally, the herds often paused outside of Dallas so that the thirsty cowboys could come into town. On occasion the Dallas Herald reported cattle stampeding through town. Dallas was on the Shawnee Trail, a branch of the better known Chisholm Trail, and cattle raisers in South Texas were finding better prices in the northern markets a decade before the more famous post-Civil War drives to Kansas."
— Darwin Payne
