Grade 3-5?In the third book in this Dutch series, a band of small animals spend their days playing in the forest and teasing a wicked witch. The hedgehog, owl, and blackbird share in chapter-long adventures, and the witch is always central to the action. Though each episode can stand as a single story, the chapters build to the conclusion, with the witch ready to leave because no one likes her. The animals are sad at the thought of life without her and take her flowers in the hope that she'll stay, which of course she does, conjuring up soup for all. The plots tend to be more silly than scary, and the witch is really more petty and crabby than she is wicked. For all the supposed problems the animals have with her, they are not shy about running to her for help. However, the weakest point of this book is the writing. The story lacks spark and a sense of place, and the dialogue is often flat and boring. Also, it's difficult to tell the animals apart since they don't consistently have separate voices. On the plus side are the charming Quentin Blake-style illustrations scattered throughout the story. They go a long way toward covering the slips in writing and will certainly add to readers' enjoyment of the book. Fans of the earlier titles are the best audience for this one.?Patricia A.
