Reviews

PreS-Gr 1-Robert is told to clean up his room, and, while procrastinating, he discovers a robot that has crash-landed in the shed across the street. The alien introduces itself and brags about its many talents. Realizing that it is low on power, Robert finds some batteries and helps restore Hugo 2's energy. The robot first hinders and then helps Robert please his mother. The text is a little disjointed and unfocused for this age group. The oversized pages with large cartoon illustrations work well with the story; however, the weakness in the text makes this one to skip in spite of the appealing subject.-Judith Constantinides, formerly at East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library, LA

Ages 3-5. Robert's room is a mess, and his mother is pretty angry about it. He tries to clean it, but decides to start over in the morning and falls asleep instead. That night, he's awakened by a loud crash. Upon investigation, he discovers that a UFO has deposited a robot in his shed. Hugo 2, the robot, appears to be dying, but Robert cleverly figures out that it just needs batteries. As thanks, Hugo 2 joyfully agrees to clean Robert's room. Charming paint and charcoal illustrations show Robert's struggle to rescue Hugo 2 and the robot's grateful cleaning flurry. While not terribly meaningful, this story about wish fulfillment, originally published in Germany, will strike a familiar chord with many children. Marta Segal
