Cultural Writing. Religion & Spirituality. Art. Asian Studies. Introduction by Chogyam Trungpa. DISCIPLES OF THE BUDDHA presents images of the eight surviving "Lohan" statues--remnants of one of the most renowned works of Eastern art, as well as "The Torch of Precious Jewels-a Sadhana of the Buddha and Sixteen Arhats" by His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche. "DISCIPLES OF THE BUDDHA is a treasure of Buddhist art, history and wisdom. These centuries-old rare images, with expressions as realistic as if we were in the very presence of the living sages in their true states of being, nourish our hearts with blessings of peace, joy and power"--Tulku Thondup. "This book brings us images which "are expressions of nonverbal experience that the artist had in the state of arahthood...We could say these images present the particular realization of Buddha's sanity in his disciples"--Chogyam Trumpa.

From the Inside Flap:
Left Flap Considered to be the direct representative of Padmasambhava in our time, His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche (1908-1987), born in Tibet, wrote twenty-three volumes of revealed teachings. He gathered and corrected all the Kama teachings totally preserving the integrity of the Nyingmapa lineage. Dudjom Rinpoche also established numerous monasteries and meditation centers throughout the world after leaving Tibet. Chögyam Trungpa (1939-1987), born in Tibet, came to North America in the early 1970 and over the next fifteen years founded a network of several hundred Buddhist meditation centers throughout the united States and Canada. He also established the first Buddhist-inspired university in North America, The Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado. Right Flap Disciples of the Buddha presents images of the eight surviving “Lohan” statues— remnants of one of the most renowned works of Eastern art. The complete original work consisted of sixteen or eighteen statues, and was a consummate achievement of the art of sculpture. Chögyam Trungpa’s lucid introductory commentary illuminates our perception of the Chinese I-Chou Lohan statues as sacred images of meditation.Disciples of the Buddha also includes The Torch of Precious Jewels—a Sadhana of the Buddha and Sixteen Arhats by Dudjom Rinpoche, which celebrates the legendary Disciples—protectors of Buddha’s Sangha.“...technically they are masterpieces, artistically they have an immediate personal impact. Religiously they reflect a belief in an all-embracing salvation.” —Peter Swann “...the Lohan is revelation of the greatness of Chinese sculpture in its classic peri- od and it may fairly claim a place among the masterpieces of all time...” —R. I. Hobson Robert Newman has taught at the City University of New York, the University of Colorado and Naropa University.
