Reviews

The meeting recorded in this volume, a two-day conference organized by the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) and the Chicago Historical Society in October 1999, is somewhat akin to the wonder of the preaching dog: the amazing thing is that it happened at all. The two communities, museum and library, which would seem to have a natural affinity, share few professional organizations, funding sources, or other common meeting grounds. Commonality of collecting, similarity of audience, and the pervading influence of technology were the major concerns of the impressive list of participants (some 30 leaders of museums and libraries attended). The discussions touched on a number of important points: digitizing collections and the extended training required for staff and user; expanding accessibility of an entire collection by a "virtual" audience; and the interpretive aspect of museum collections in contrast to the libraries' role of access without mediation. The conclusions drawn were proposals for the future rather than solutions for the present. In the rapidly changing environment in which cultural institutions are reshaping their images, the web, properly used, can be the doorway to a vital new environment. This report, which includes the four papers presented at the conference and summaries of the resulting discussions, is recommended for academic, larger public, and museum libraries.DPaula Frosch, Metropolitan Museum of Art Lib., New York
