Synopsis

Imagine being stopped on a cross-country trip by the police for a traffic infraction, then being held in a farmhouse by those officers far away from civilization in the most depraved conditions. If you can, then you have the premise for this novel.

Day One I don't know where the hell I am. T T exas, sure, but beyond that I'm lost. I turned off I-20 over an hour ago, onto a state road I thought would take me to the job site, but that hasn't panned out. None of the landmarks are matching the map I got from the customer, and I've been trying to thread my way back to the interstate without much luck. It's a sure bet I'm going to be late, and I press down on the accelerator so at least I can get nowhere a little faster. I I t's after 9 AM on a Thursday morning. The car smells of grease from the egg-and-cheese-McHeartStopper I had for breakfast, and the taste of bitter coffee is lingering at the back of my throat. This job site was the last stop on my road trip, and I was looking forward to heading home to Florida after this. For the hundredth time I berate myself for not having a cell phone - at least then I could call the customer and get directions. Well, there's bound to be a diner or gas stations around here somewhere. I'll get directions there, make a phone call and be back on track before too long. O O utside my car windows Texas is mostly flat and mostly brown. The sun is coming up ahead of me, neatly tucked behind the rearview mirror, and I've got Marilyn Manson on the stereo to stave off fatigue. I didn't sleep well last night, and my eyelids are as heavy as bricks. Police lights are going off in my rearview mirror, snapping me to attention. Fuck! I must have been dozing with my foot on the accelerator! There are two cops in the cruiser behind me, and since there's no one else on the road they definitely want me. I slow the car and pull over to the shoulder, kill the engine and the music as the cruiser pulls in behind me. The flashing lights turn-off. My heart is pounding in my chest. I've had speeding tickets before, but nothing more serious than that, and with my luck the gay and leather pride stickers on the back of my car just might buy me some extra shit from these two. They probably won't recognize the leather pride flag - most straights haven't caught onto that one yet - but the rainbow symbol is pretty well known. I exhale. This might be awkward. T T he cops don't move for several moments, probably calling in my plate. They talk with each other for a bit more, drawing it out, before they open their doors. My stomach does a somersault. I roll down the window, then search the glove compartment for the registration.
