The text of the book is mainly photographs. Sadly the camera men seem to have avoided the capital's redlight district. The great value is in the 24 by 36 inch map showing the exact location of dozens of wartime bordellos and the number of "girls" therein.

About the Author
The book is one entry into a vast catalog of previously neglected areas of Civil War sociology. Battles, tactics, strategy, and weapons have been thoroughly studied by others. My own background in medicine and psychiatry draws me to the human stories of the war, the personal dramas that shaped men and women, our flesh and blood ancestors. In the present day, my work has included inmates of San Quentin's death row, sexually worried middle class couples, two psychotic one-star generals, delusional locals on an outer island of the Hawaiian chain, brawling military recruits, a paranoid Mescalero Apache, and a dozen women paralyzed by the Evil Eye of a bruja. Not to mention the depressions of suburbia. All these experiences prepared me to have an open mind regarding Victorian foibles.
