9781887943635: Test Anxiety & What You Can Do About It

Synopsis

Higher standards and greater accountability have contributed to an alarming rise in test anxiety in our students. To help them pass mandated assessments, teachers drill on facts and give endless practice tests. But teaching to the test isn't enough. High stakes testing produces high anxiety which, in turn, lowers performance. Teachers, parents, and kids must do more to minimize its negative effects and increase test results. This book offers constructive and powerful strategies that specifically target the physical, emotional, and cognitive symptoms of anxiety. This resource serves as a comprehensive and practical guide for test-takers of all ages. It is an essential resource for teachers and parents of students who are faced with the increased testing mandates of the No Child Left Behind Act.

About the Author

Dr. Joseph Casbarro has worked as an educator for thirty years in public schools, including administrative positions as building principal, director of special programs, and assistant superintendent of schools. He received his Ph.D. from Syracuse University in School Psychology and has taught for many years at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Dr. Casbarro's interest in writing on test anxiety was a combination of his training and experiences as a psychologist, his observations of the impact of high stakes testing on schools as an administrator, and the personal experiences of his two school-age children as a parent.

Review

"...Dr. Casbarro's advice turns parents into therapists, teachers into coaches..." -- Dr. Peter Salovey, Dean of the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, Yale University, and Co-Founder of the theory of Emotional Intelligence

"...extremely useful, practical guide to address test anxiety...should be read by all mental health clinicians who treat children." -- Flemming Graae, M.D., Chief of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, New York Medical College

"Finally...a book that addresses parents, teachers and students! A "must-read" for all parents with children burdened with test anxiety!" -- Rosa Lagana, Parent

"High stakes standards and testing is no longer and option, but a mandate. Dr. Casbarro's book couldn't be more timely." -- Michele Borba, Ed.D., best selling author of Building Moral Intelligence and No More Misbehavin'

"The best book of its kind, by far! --Dr. Maurice J. Elias, Ph.D., Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning and author of Engaging the Resistant Child through Computers and Raising Emotionally Intelligent Teenagers
