A well woven story of historical fact and adventure. Following the unlikely murder of their mother, Iris and her sister Rosie flee a New York tenement and begin their struggle to survive on the streets of a squalid slum. After three hungry days, the girls meet a self-proclaimed Street Rat, named Pete, who buys them food and treats them with kindness. A strong bond of friendship and devotion develop between these three. Loyalty to one another provides them with the courage needed to persevere through one shocking event after another as they are taken on the Orphan Train from New York City to the land of Iowa. In spite of their longing to be reunited, Iris, Rosie, and Pete are forcibly and unjustly kept apart. Each of the three children tells his/her story about the love that sustains them through painfully hard times.

About the Author:
Ethel Barker is an author and a retired reading educator in Iowa City. Her forthcoming book is entitled For The Love of Pete: An Orphan Train Story (Ice Cube Press). It is being released in October 2012.
Review:
Ethel Barker s novel is rich in the kind of detail that brings a past era to vivid life. Readers young and old will feel as though they are riding on that orphan train and braving the unknown in the wilds of Iowa! Best of all, Barker gives us three unforgettable young characters to root for. --Mary Helen Stefaniak, author, The Cailiffs of Baghdad, Georgia: A Novel

Ethel Barker has clearly done her research, and For the Love of Pete puts an entirely human face on the dramatic history of Iowa s Orphan Train children. --Rebecca Johns, author, The Countess: A Novel of Elizabeth Bathory

With her first novel, Ethel Barker takes us along on a lively, adventure-filled ride with the children of the Orphan Train. Her tale is richly woven, full of warmth, wit and surprise and best of all, a cast of plucky characters who instantly drew me into this little-known chapter of American history. --Delia Ray, author, Here Lies Linc
