Reviews

Fessenbecker is president of the six-year-old Construction Contracting Academy in Eugene, Oregon. The academy provides accredited self-study courses, written by Fessenbecker, for the Oregon Contractors Prerequisite Education Program. Here he expands on the academy's offering with this reference set that thoroughly details major aspects of the contracting business. Each of the 15 volumes (which are available individually in hard copy for $19.95 or together on CD-ROM for $179) covers a specific business topic. Topics include contract law, record keeping, project scheduling, cash and finance, estimating, safety and security, sales and customer service, business management, lien law, business planning, independent contractor and employee issues, environmental issues, building codes, office management, and licensing and registration. Although TAB Books' Start and Run a Money-Making Business series, which targets specific categories of contracting, such as drywall, electrical, or roofing, is an excellent, affordable resource, Fessenbecker's much more comprehensive set should be considered by any library trying to build an in-depth small-business collection or hoping to provide career resources for persons interested in the trades.
