Infancy: A table and brief text regarding APGAR scores followed by: Respiratory Distress Syndrome
Classic Presentation: A premature infant with cyanosis, grunting respirations, and retractions. Respiratory distress syndrome is also referred to as hyaline membrane disease. This is a pulmonary disease associated with prematurity. It is caused by surfactant deficiency. Treat with surfactant. Sometimes intubation is necessary. Choanal Atresia
Classic Presentation: A newborn infant with failure to breath and cyanosis that is alleviated when the infant cries. Choanal atresia is caused by congenital membranous or bony septum between the nose and pharynx. Most infants breathe effectively only through their noses, so the obstruction is bypassed when they cry and thus breathe through their mouths. Those infants that are able to mouth breathe become cyanotic when they try to feed. Treat with surgical repair.
