Synopsis
Tucson, Arizona, native Roy P. Drachman played an active role in his community's life for much of the twentieth century.
One of the city's primary movers and shakers, he helped to establish Tucson's identity in modern America. Drachman's memoirs vividly paint the old Pueblo's growth from sleepy cowtown to world-class urban center and tourist destination. His vignettes recall the days of horseback transportation, harking back to Tucson's Wild West heritage, and folks doing what they could to keep cool in the desert heat. They then recount memories of the postwar boom as life got faster and Tucson became a real hot spot.
As a key player in business and politics, Drachman takes readers behind the scenes of negotiations to bring Hughes Aircraft to Tucson, planning and zoning decisions, and projects with the developer Del Webb. Recalling the city at leisure, Roy evokes the excitement over the arrival of big baseball; the Fox Theater's heyday and the crowd at Dooley's Pool Hall, Tucson's most popular gathering place.
