The book Once When We Were Young is the story of three young farm boys who joined the Texas State Militia in 1860. At the time of secession, they enlisted in the last battle of the conflict. They traveled and fought for their southern homeland for four long and arduous years. During that time, they suffered hunger, fatigue, and saw many of their comrades die. They experienced times of joy during marriages and hurried leaves home to see loved ones. This story is based on real battles and real soldiers who fought in the war. It is the story of the war across the Mississippi River seen through the eyes of boys fresh off the farm who sought only to do their duty for home and country.
