Inside this volume is everything that is known about the "T" tankers. It begins with the hsitory fo the U.S. emergency shipbuilding program in the 1930s and the evolution of transporting oil by sea. But the main focus is on the ships. Every T-type ship is accounted for, including who or what she was named for, and all the other names she became known under, cross-referenced and comprehensively listed in the indexes. There are diagrams, specifications and almost 300 photos and illustrations. This is truly "the last word" on the T-type tankers, and the most complete.

Capt. Jaffee graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York in 1965. He sailed as a licensed deck officer in the U.S. Merchant Marine, receiving his master's papers at the age of twenty-six. He earned a master's degree in public administration from California State University. Formerly employed by the Maritime Administration as Superintendent of the Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet, he was an adjunct professor at California Maritime Academy and was first officer on the SS Jeremiah O'Brien during her historic six-month return voyage to Normandy for the 50th Anniversary of D-Day in 1994. He has written twelve books on the Merchant Marine, Navy and maritime academy training ships. His articles and stories have appeared in more than 100 publications. He was technical consultant on the Atlas Warships Series and a contributor to the Virginia Military Institute's three-volume Encyclopedia of Naval History.
All in all, another solid accomplishment from Jaffee which should serve as the devinitive reference for these ships for a long time --Stone & Stone, second world war books
Here is one of those classic labors of love that can never financially reward an author for the months and years of effort that went into its compilation. But then Walter Jaffee is no ordinary writer. Having penned more than a dozen non-fiction reference type books this master mariner/historican has now undertaken chronicling one of his favorite type vessels, the T-2 series ocean going tankers. The T-2 was to tankers what the Liberty ship was to freighters for within their enormous hulls all manner of oils and lubricants traversed the Seven Seas for well over half a century. Evolved from the Maritime Commission mandate to design a variety of tanker sizes built to a common standard, the T-2 in its many variations went on to carry the bulk of the world's oil shipments until the advent of the postwar supertankers. America's tanker industry began shortly after the discovery of oil in Pennsylvania in 1859 and evolved through WWI into a highly complex specialty vessel. By the 1930s the worldwide demand for bulk oil transportation became so demanding that the Maritime Commission acknowledged this need by ordering the design of a bulk oil ship that could be built quickly and efficiently by any large shipyard. The result was the highly successful T-2 series which with very little alteration also saw a number ordered as naval Oilters. Author Jaffee uses the alphabet to relate the amazing history of these ships. Well illustrated with diagrams, drawings and photos this highly detaild reference work should be or immense interest to anyone who has ever crewed one of these ships, and to maritime buffs who want to round out their nautical libraries with one of the most important types of vessel ever to ply the world's oceans. A good job, Walter --Sea Classics, November 2008
