The book includes case studies of the five winners of the 1999 Rudy Bruner Award including:
· Yerba Buena Gardens, San Francisco, California: Yerba Buena Gardens is an 87-acre mixed use urban development in the South of Market district of San Francisco. It is a diverse, contemporary mixed use facility, comprising a cultural center with over two dozen museums and galleries; an open space network; housing, and entertainment facilities. The project has helped to reclaim a severely blighted sector of San Francisco, has provided jobs, cultural amenities and open space to residents; and has supported the growing tourism industry in San Francisco.
· ARTScorpsLA, Los Angeles, California: ARTScorpsLA has transformed blighted parcels of abandoned land within the inner city into vital, transformed public art places. Through ARTScorpsLA, young people in the community can design and create art-based community gathering places on parcels of vacant and abandoned land. The project promotes the concept of community building through the arts throughout inner-city areas of Los Angeles.
· National AIDS Memorial Grove, San Francisco, California: The National AIDS Memorial Grove is the first living memorial in honor of all people touched by AIDS. Built to transform a wooded dell in Golden Gate Park, the Memorial Grove was developed to honor people with AIDS/HIV, their families, friends, and caregivers through the creation of a landscaped setting for healing, hope and remembrance.
· Parkside Preservation, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Parkside Preservation has restored a series of late 1800’s mansions and townhouses bordering a major inner city park in downtown Philadelphia. These restored mansions have provided space for a variety of social programs, and housing for a mix of ages and incomes. The program has preserved important buildings in downtown Philadelphia while providing programming critical to support of the local community.
· The Portland Public Market, Portland, Maine: This is a newly constructed indoor fresh food market that houses 28 permanent vendors selling fresh food and flowers, and eight stalls for small farmers and food producers. Since opening in early October 1998, the Portland Public Market has become a major addition to Portland’s downtown, contributing to the revitalization of the city.

In addition to winner case studies, the book contains a distillation of Selection Committee process and discussion.
