He describes the history of the legislation (officially entitled The Serviceman's Readjustment Act of 1944) and discusses the importance, success, and lasting legacy of the bill. Its major benefits are discussed in detail: financial support while unemployed, assistance for educational programs ranging from specific job training to higher education, and loans for home, business, and farm ownership. Although much of this information is covered in Michael J. Bennett's When Dreams Come True: The G.I.
