The C major scale is a 7 note scale containing the notes C, D, E, F, G, A, B and is played over a C chord or a progression of chords that are in the key of C major. Every key has a group of chords that are commonly associated with it. These chords are called the "Diatonic Chords of the Key." (You will find an article explaining Diatonic Chords in the member s area of the muse-eek website.) In the key of C major these diatonic chords are: C, D-, E-, F, G, A- B°. (- sign refers to minor and ° refers to diminished). Therefore you will find many chord progressions containing the aforementioned chords where you will use a C major scale to improvise. In order to know whether a specific chord progression is in the key of C you will need to develop your aural recognition skills. It is important that you understand the key(s) that a song or chord progression is functioning in from a theoretical and aural perspective. I suggest you get "Ear Training One Note Complete" if you want to develop your aural skills (See page 14).
The C major pentatonic scale is a 5 note scale and contains the notes C, D, E, G, A. and has the same characteristics as the C major scale. Therefore any place that you can use a C major scale you can use a C major pentatonic scale. The pentatonic scale is one of the most used scales in contemporary music. It is also interesting to note that the notes of a C major pentatonic scale are the same as an A minor pentatonic scale. The notes in an A minor pentatonic are A, C, D, E, G. Because the notes are the same in the A minor Pentatonic as in a C major pentatonic scale, the A minor pentatonic is said to be one of the "modes" of the C pentatonic and visa versa.
