"It is not the description of the guru or what the guru talks that is important. What is important is how much you are coming into contact with your own unmanifest force, how much you feel contact between the known and unknown. The ruling force of your life is unmanifest. If you neglect that, you will not be happy."

"This inner force is called the guru. It is a guiding light. You do not need to believe in it. That I want to tell you first. You do not need to believe in that guiding light. It is in you, and like a mirror this guiding light reflects everything back."

-- Shri Brahmananda Sarasvati

As a young physician, surgeon and professor of medicine in Bombay, Doctor R.S. Mishra met the mighty master, Baba Bhagavandas Bodhisattva who was destined to become his Sadguru, his final teacher and guide.

In this remarkable collection of engaging stories and enlightened teachings of the majestic and magnetic Baba Bhagavandas, we find recorded the inner quest of another spiritual giant, Doctor Ramamurti S. Mishra (later known by his sannyasa name, Shri Brahmananda Sarasvati), as he confronts the burning questions of his life: "What is the relationship between the individual and the unmanifest, and how will the gap between the two be bridged? What is the relationship between the guru and the disciple? Is it possible that God really can vibrate through any man? What is meditation? What is the meaning of transfer of power, and who is qualified for that? Why is that power not transferred to us?"

This compelling narrative will touch the devoted heart and soul. A story of uncompromising dedication, absolute love and grace, it will guide us on our journey to experience higher planes of intuition and initiation, to come into direct contact with our own unknown force, the pure light of spirit in human consciousness.

From the Publisher:
This publication is an interweaving of the engaging stories and enlightening teachings by Shri Brahmananda Sarasvati during two birthday celebrations honoring his Sadguru, Baba Bhagavandas Bodhisattva, at Ananda Ashram. These talks, recorded in evening programs on August 10, 1974 and August 20, 1983, were transcribed and combined, creating the present edition.

During his years with Baba Bhagavandas in Bombay, Shri Brahmananda was a practicing physician, surgeon and professor of medicine. His earnest search for direct knowledge of ultimate reality led him to this majestic and godly Baba, whom he referred to as "a man of magic". Shri Brahmananda's quest to discover who this mysterious master was serves as a light to guide us in our journey to the Supreme Self.

In reverence and gratitude, we dedicate this publication to the living spirit of Sadguru Baba Bhagavandas Bodhisattva, after whom the Baba Bhagavandas Publication Trust is named.

May the inner guru awaken and enlighten all beings.

May all beings be happy.

About the Author:
Shri Brahmananda Sarasvati, also known as Ramamurti S. Mishra, M.D., had an extensive background in Eastern and Western medicine. In 1955, after years of practicing and teaching medicine and surgery in his native India, he came to the West for further research and advanced medical studies. In the years that followed, he served as a resident physician at leading university hospitals in the United States and Canada.

In 1958, Dr. Mishra founded the Yoga Society of New York, Inc. In 1966 he gave up his medical career to concentrate on his spiritual teaching, founding ashrams and centers of meditation and learning in the United States, Canada and Europe. His two leading centers today are Ananda Ashram in Monroe, New York (opened in 1964 as the country retreat center for the Yoga Society of New York) and Brahmananda Ashram (founded in 1973 at the Yoga Society of San Francisco, Inc). Dr. Mishra's life was dedicated to the integration of ancient and modern, Eastern and Western science, culture and philosophy for transformation, Self-realization and universal peace through spiritual unity. He left his body in September 1993, yet his spiritual presence continues to pervade his ashrams, and his timeless teachings remain a source of inspiration and guidance for all.
