Synopsis

  • From the cartoonist of Van Helsing's Night Off, comes another quirky introspective. Lone Racer is the story of a down-and-out racecar driver whose days of success are long gone. After a misguided attempt at bank robbery, where he is supposed to drive the getaway car, Lone Racer decides that the days of going downhill are over. Will Lone Racer get back on track?

Reviews

Mahler tells a comeback tale worthy of Moe's Tavern in The Simpsons. Erstwhile champ Lone Racer just won't quit, not while his wife's fading away in the hospital, and he has to keep up the rent on their room (with "pisser in the hallway") by his lonesome. He also has to buy enough beer to keep Bar Juanjo open, if not for himself, then for his old racing pal, Rubber, and mechanic-turned-cop Irksome. After Irksome quits coming to Bar Juanjo (he had inveigled LR to drive for a prospective bank heist, but when rush hour made double-parking iffy, chickened out and couldn't show his face again), things get dire. So LR decides to clean up, train a bit, and win. Mahler's simple, speedy cartooning makes arms, legs, and LR's entire body curve, and everybody's head is all and only hat and nose. Including an interlude in which LR has "a middling love-affair," this corny-old-movie scenario is, thanks largely to its looks, delightfully ludicrous. Ray Olson
