Author of numerous works of poetry (most recently First Words), drama (under the name Kier Peters) and fiction, Messerli is the publisher of Green Integer.
Inspired by the fine Poems for the Millennium (1995), edited by Jerome Rothenberg and Pierre Joris, poet-publisher Messerli began to compile his own anthology of language-intoxicated poetry from around the world. Intending a three-volume work, he soon found so many treasures that that limitation had to be exceeded. Indeed, Messerli has pledged to publish two volumes annually until he has made all the works of the poets he admires available in the U.S. In the first volume, he presents 20 poets from 14 countries; Spanish-language poets outnumber any other kinds of contributor. With the exception of Russia's Osip Mandelshtam, few of the poets are well known in the U.S. In most cases, they weren't known to one another. What unites them is fiery and unconventional use of language; they stretch the limits of what can be spoken. Excellent biographical sketches and a bibliography of each poet's work add to the book's value for libraries. Patricia Monaghan
