For forty-five years, Robert (Chip) Wood has worked on behalf of children from preschool through eighth grade as a classroom teacher, teaching principal, and teacher educator. After studying at the Gesell Institute of Human Development early in his career, Chip made developmentally based teaching the center of his educational practice. His core belief: knowing what children at each age are developmentally capable of doing physically, socially, emotionally and cognitively enables respectful, successful teaching of all children no matter their life circumstances or cultural background. A co-developer of Responsive Classroom and co-founder of Northeast Foundation for Children (now Center for Responsive Schools), Chip has served as principal of two public schools and was co-founder of Greenfield Center School. He is a facilitator for the Center for Courage & Renewal and co-creator of Leading Together, an approach focused on strengthening the adult community of schools.
In an age dominated by standardized test scores, Chip Wood's, Yardsticks, is a treasure. It describes children as living, breathing, feeling, thinking beings. Many of the anecdotes made me chuckle or smile. Informed by a deep knowledge of general developmental trends, Wood also urges teachers to take time to observe each child as an individual, and he provides helpful tips for doing so. Most of all, this book helps us appreciate children, reminding us that they are truly a joy. I find this book life-affirming. I love it. --William Crain, Professor of Psychology, The City College of New York and author of Theories of Development: Concept and Applications.
Yardsticks is a must-have resource for those committed to helping children learn. The heart of beautiful teaching emanates from understanding how children tick, think, learn and develop. Chip Wood synthesizes the far-flung field of child development into accessible portraits and then provides practical and applied strategies that will help children thrive. --Sam Intrator, Smith College, Elizabeth A. Woodson 1922 Professor of Education & Child Study,Faculty Director of the Smith College (K-6) Campus School
