About the Author:
Dave Kohl is a teacher. For 32 years he taught and demonstrated studio art and art history to secondary classes in Chicago, Hong Kong, and Clackamas Oregon. He continues to teach art appreciation activities at Portland's Classical Chinese Garden, adjunct courses at Concordia University, and through writing. He is an avid gardner of bamboo, a philistine cook, and an organizer of group activities in the Portland area, of reunions, and of small group overseas travel experiences. He is a collector of antiquarian art, history, and travel books, with a special interest in Asian art history. With an educational background in Lutheran primary and secondary schools, he graduated from Concordia Teachers College, Nebraska, in 1968 with a double major in art education and social studies. Graduate work at the University of Illinois led to a MA in Art Education in 1972. Next stop was Hong Kong International School, where Dave taught all high school art subjects, led several tours into China and Southeast Asia, and earned an MA in Comparative Asian Studies from HKU in 1978. Returning to the United States in 1980 to raise his family, he taught in the secondary schools of Clackamas, Oregon, and served as adjunct instructor of art at Concordia University. He currently operates his own pottery studio, researches and writes history, is active in the alumni association of HKIS, and participates in several community musical organizations. Three books have resulted form his authorship: Chinese Architecture in the Straits Settlements (1984); A Curious and Peculiar People (2006) (IPY Silver Award medalist); and Dragon Taels (2007).
