If you do not perform transfusions often, is it because there is no need? Or is it because you are not as confident or skilled as you would like to be in the procedure? Transfusion medicine is a useful and important component in medicine, and especially important in emergency medicine. The book starts out with how to set up a community-based blood bank, including owner/donor attributes; basic equipment needs for blood; and collection, processing, and storage. The second section goes into the fine details of blood collections systems -- the processing, storage, and shipment of blood. The third section takes on the clinical considerations in transfusion practice. The fourth section covers biosafety, and the fifth section covers methods -- including preparation of fresh whole blood and frozen plasma; crossmatch procedures; warming whole blood; and centrifuge calibration. There are two appendices: one for manufacturers of blood collection bags, and one for organizations with veterinary blood bank interests. However, one of the listings (Animal Blood Bank) gives the address as California when it is actually Missouri. This book is a well prepared guide to routinely performed laboratory procedures in a dog/cat transfusion service.
